Grid System for Print
So this week we were working on creating a grid system for our future inflight magazine. Let me tell you this; grid systems are a pain in the ass for those who hated mathematics in high school. I was one of them. My motto regarding math is as follows;
Respect and view in awe that is which you have no talent in.
Yet, there is no escape. And I really don’t want to spend my next months in torture, trying to place my text and image with a problem every step in the way.
You’re lucky because I am giving away my grid here! I worked hard on it, so be nice.
We are working on an A3 canvas sideways that would be our spreads.
Before getting my calculator out, I decided on getting my information ready. Such as what would be the best size for my gutter for my columns. Best size for gutter is understood through placing two ‘MM’ between your preferred size and font. Here is a caption of mine. I chose Garamond and Agenda for my basis of serif and sans serif texts.
Above is the screen shot for 10 pt. Adobe Garamond Pro. It seemed 6mm was perfectly fine.
This is for Agenda Regular in 10 pt as well. As you can see 6mm is still perfect. Thus, it concluded that my gutter size for my columns would be 6mm.
So came the next step of deciding the space I would leave on the sides of my canvas, so that when the reader holds my magazine on the sides the fingers would not land on fingers. I gave 20mm from each sides with and additional 10 mm as my bleed. I also felt the need to leave a decent amount of space in the middle of my magazine where the fold would appear.
Now it was time for my columns. I decided I did not wish to have an even number for my columns but instead make it an odd number so that with the gutters included I would have my free space on the folding area.
This is a screen shot of my canvas.
I have placed 17 columns that are 16. 706mm in size. And 15 rows. The middle column with the gutters on both side acts as my free space for the fold of the magazine.
As you can see my gutter fits perfectly for my text. And the crowded amount of columns will allow me to create many diverse solutions.
I can create a 4 column text if I wish to very easily, thanks to this grid system.
I can also have big chunks of texts, and still have a place for my little text boxes that I plan to use in the future.
Here is the png of my file with the visible grids and guides. It just looks clean and safe, not giving away the hard calculation behind it at all right :)
You can see the areas left as free space, and the black just shows my bleed around my canvas.
AND HERE IS THE FILE YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR! I uploaded to mediafire, so go get it and use it however you want. Open the psd file and make your guides visible.
ONE WARNING: Because this is essentially a work for school the document is 24 ppi for RGB but since I just gave you the formula, I think you can easily create it by yourself.

“Most laptop bags were a bit boring and never had what I needed while on a short trip, so I created my own,” says Maarten van den Biggelaar, the man behind TravelTeq.
“Our bag is a combination of the finest Italian leather we could find and all the compartments you need.” He’d know. The Dutch media entrepreneur (with tours of duty at Elle and Amsterdam’s answer to MTV) is no stranger to the inside of a plane.
So when he created his ideal bag, it had to be as luxurious as the suits he wore, but as durable as his well-worn suitcase. Hand crafted from Florentine vachetta leather, it’s for the flyer not afraid of paying for an upgrade—which may explain the cigar compartment.

Street food VS Michelin Starred Restaurants
Pani Puri (Gol Goppa) Indian Street Food

What we need:
45 Pani Puris
For Pani:
3 1/2 cups water
1 tsp tamarind paste
1 tsp salt (or according to taste)
pinch asofoetida powder
1 tsp pani puri masala
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp black salt
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
handful of fresh mint leaves (grinded into a paste)
1 tsp roasted cumin powder
2 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp mango chutney or sweet tamarind chutney (whatever you have in the pantry)
2 trays of ice cubes
For the filling:
8 medium potatoes, cooked and peeled. (I microwaved mine for 15 minutes)
1 red/green fresh chilli
handful of mint leaves
1 tsp tamarind paste
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
2-3 tbsp water
1 tsp salt
How we do:
- To make the pani, in a pan, add 1 cup water, tamarind paste and asofoetida powder and let it come to a boil. Let it boil for 2 minutes and then remove from the heat.
- Put it in a bowl and add the remaining water and the ice. Also, add the rest of the dry ingredients listed above. Mix well and add mint paste, lemon juice and sugar.
(Taste the pani at this point-you can add more water or salt depending on your preference) - For the potato filling, in a blender, add the chilli, mint, tamarind paste, lemon juice and water. Blend until a chutney paste forms.
- Finely chop the potatoes on a chopping board and sprinkle over the salt. Transfer to mixing bowl.
- Gradually add the chutney paste and softly mash everything together with hand.
- Taste again. If you need more salt, now is the time to add.
- Using a pointed knife or using your finger, carefully make a whole at the top of the puri about the size of 2 pence piece. Repeat process for all puri.
- Put about 1 tsp of the potato filling by hand into the puri (Only stuff the puri with potatoes when you are ready to eat them. Otherwise they may soggy).
- Now for the best bit-to chow down! Dip the stuffed puri in the pani and go for it!
- BALLE BALLE!! Enjoy

Here are some images to show the style of recipe part or maybe for some other usage:

This one will need some re-touching with it’s colors and etc..

I think of this one as a painting, isn’t it :)

Saint
Sometimes somebody utters a series words that sticks to your brain cells like cancer. This was one of them. ”Saint, I ain’t.” Thus, I wanted to make something out of it. Right now, nothing much more than turning it into a typographic work. I do plan to hang it on my wall one day though…
I started with the font Amperzand, but as you can see it did go through some drastic changes :)
